Dean holds positions as Professor of physical education at the Department of Primary and Secondary Teacher Education at Oslo Metropolitan University and associate professor at the School of Health Sciences at Örebro University.
His research focuses on student learning in physical education. Ongoing projects aim to develop pedagogical strategies for teachers that will enhance students’ learning experiences. Dean is on the editorial boards of the journals Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy and Sport, Education and Society.
Title of his presentation is: ‘Metaphors of movement learning: How we think we learn to move’.
Human movement researchers have spent a great deal of time investigating how individuals develop movement skills. A close reading of this research shows that there are four main ways researchers have understood skill development, and that each way corresponds to a specific metaphor. In the presentation, I will examine each metaphor, and discuss the implications that the metaphors have for teachers and learners of movement skills. I will finish the presentation by considering if and how these metaphors might be brought together in practical situations.
Dean will have the presentation for all three tracks (Learn to Swim, Competitive Swimming and Diving).
He will also have one workshop for each track. In this workshop, participants will be invited to ‘work with’ the metaphors of movement learning presented by Dean in his keynote presentation. Each participant will be asked to (1) consider which metaphor(s) already inform their movement pedagogies, (2) create one-two new exercises that they could use with the learners with whom they work, and (3) share their new ways with other members in the seminar.
